Festo Didactic, the training arm of world leading automation company Festo AG, sponsored the UK Skill Mechatronics competition – also affectionately known as the "Skills Olympics" – held at the recent Maintec exhibition in March (Plate 1).

As a primary sponsor of the UK competition, Fest Didactic GB supplied the equipment for the national final. Festo is also a major sponsor for the world final in Switzerland later this year where Barry Thompson and Nigel Dunlop, both mechatronic technicians from Gallagher Ltd, will be off to represent the UK having won the national event.

The competition is run by Skill Mechatronics, an organisation dedicated to the development and support of multi-skilled engineers through competitive events. As an accredited member of UK Skills, the organisation is recognised by the British government as the standard-setting body for skills competitions in the United Kingdom. It is also the official body affiliated to the World Skills organisation and is responsible for the British entry to the World "Skill Olympics".
