New sealed 3-jaw gripper ideal for robots and automated assembly machines

Keywords: Robots, Grippers

One of the most useful work-clamping devices for robots and automated assembly machines operating in difficult environments is an hexagonal 3-jaw gripper available from Leader, London (see Plate 5).

Rust protected and fully sealed, this series of air-powered grippers for internal and external clamping is highly resistant to the ingress of dirt and swarf as well as water and acid residues.

Models range in size from 52 mm diameter up to 109 mm diameter with jaw strokes of 3 × 3 mm-3 × 8 mm and gripping forces spanning 138 N-2778N.

Construction of the hexagonal housing and the jaws is from hard anodised aluminium. The laws are also nickelplated. All other moving parts are in a durable hard chromium- plated bronze.

Each of the jaws features a guide pin mounted on an incline to the jaw. The guide pin travels inside a groove milled into the piston. As the piston travels up and down, the pin slides along the groove to open and close the jaws.

Adjustable trip dogs are mounted on the jaws. These have threaded holes underneath to locate sensor mounts for proximity switches. The switches are available in sizes ranging from 3 to 12 mm, depending on the size of the gripper.

Air connections are located on the side and back of the gripper and ample holes for pins, centering disks and screws are provided to enable convenient mounting.
