are the recipients of the Gunter Wittenberg Award for the Journal’s Outstanding Paper Award for Excellence for their paper

"Synchronisation of material flow and assembly in hybrid and modular systems"

which appeared in Assembly Automation Vol. 21 No. 2, 2001

Professor Dr-Ing Dieter Spath born in 1952, graduated in mechanical engineering focussing on production science and manufacturing at the Technical University of Munich where he then completed his PhD. He became The Managing Director of KAST enterprises before being appointed to the post of full professor at the University of Karlsruhe (TH), Institute of Machine Tools and Production Science. He was elected Dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering. He is the corresponding member of the Int. Institution for Production Engineering Research, CIRP, Paris and member of the senate committee and authorizing committee for Special Research fields at the German Research Association (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG). Professor Spath has authored author of several books and more than 200 articles in different journals and international seminars.

Michael Baumeister works as a scientist at the Institute of Machine Tools and Production Science at the University of Karlsruhe (TH). He has authored author of several article sin scientific journals and surveys such as Industry Management and Service Engineering. He graduated in mechanical engineering in 1999 at the University of Karlsruhe with a Dipl. -Ing. Focussing on research in production planning, agile assembly structures and service engineering he also managed different consulting projects within these fields.
