Acknowledged as a world leader in tiny precision motors, maxon motor has announced the launch of a new, larger product for heavy duty applications.

The new 250W RE 75 – the biggest in the maxon motor RE series – has been developed for industrial use including machine tools and production machinery. The unit utilises neodymium magnets, a material selected for its efficiency, durability and exceptional cost-effectiveness compared with many more expensive substances (see Plate 10).

It is manufactured to IP54 protection requirements, which means that it is splash-proof and therefore suited to a variety of damp, and even wet, working environments. The RE 75 has an exceptionally long life expectancy for a mechanically commutated motor. This is achieved by four-pole operation, which gives half the usual current load and the lower inductance of the ironless winding employed by maxon motor.

A version of the RE 75 is also available with a brush monitoring system – an electrical signal is received well before the four graphite brushes come to the end of their working life. Should they finally wear out, the brushes can be easily replaced.

Importantly, the motor has an exceptionally long life expectancy for a mechanically commutated unit. This is achieved through four-pole operation – which gives half the usual current load – and the lower inductance of the ironless winding employed by maxon motor. Other advantages include a maximum efficiency of 91.3 per cent, zero cogging, a time constant of 4ms, and high overload capacity.

Flexibility and adaptability

There are 11 different windings that can be adapted to any particular application, giving immense operational flexibility. The motor is also amazingly adaptable, with brakes (which can hold the rotor's angular position), planetary gearhead and encoders, all able to be fitted.

  • Planetary gearhead GP081 – available in six different ratios providing for torques up to 180Nm.

  • Dynamic braking moment 1.25Nm.

  • Encoder provides 1,000 pulses per turn at TTL levels on two 90 displaced channels.

  • Encoder provides one pulse per turn on the index channel.

Encoder and brake connections use round screw-on type receptacles for easy and safe coupling with the cable. Normed PG-screw type feed-throughs are used for the motor and brush system and there is plenty of access space in the generously dimensioned termination box.
