A high-precision weld-head, specifically designed to meet the needs of high-quality power pack manufacturers, is now available from Townsend Coates. Thought to offer a number of significant advantages over other weld-heads, including ultra-small electrodes with fine gap adjustment, the product is reported to be suitable for any parallel gap application, including small cells.

Suitable for joining thin tab material to a wide variety of today's advanced battery cell technologies, such as coin, prismatic and cylindrical cells, the Unitek Series 500 weld-head (Plate 2) has been designed to work in high-volume production environments where quality, cost per part, set-up and maintenance are important factors. With a 1.5mm electrode rod which enables fine positioning for small cells, the product also offers fine gap adjustment in a true horizontal plane and independent electrode force to adjust for polarity.

Capable of three welds per second, the Series 500 delivers a force range of 1-7lb per electrode, and offers precise down-speed control to reduce impact and eliminate damage to fragile components. The product is driven by Unitek's (patented) EZ-AIR technology which repeatedly triggers the weld with no overforce, regardless of speed or electrode stroke. This provides a weld-to-weld force repeatability of 5 per cent (1-2lb) and ±2.5 per cent (>2lb). An EZClean function allows easy electrode maintenance and the force indicator light confirms repeatable firing.

Said to be ideal for bench work and automation, the Series 500 includes stand and base plate as standard, and features secure force setting with lock.
