The Society of Manufacturing Engineers adds e-learning for manufacturing training

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) announces that it is currently offering two online courses for the manufacturing and engineering community, "Lean manufacturing – fundamentals" and "Planning manufacturing cells – fundamentals". These online courses are unique in their engaging and interactive approach and enable individuals to learn faster and at less cost than public courses. The Michigan Virtual University is a co-sponsor.

"SME is the first professional society offering online training for the manufacturing community", says Nancy Berg, SME executive director and general manager. "Manufacturing professionals and companies can now opt to learn via the Internet and these two online courses are only the beginning of SME's new ground-breaking innovations with e-learning."

According to John McEachran, director of SME's continuing education and professional development division, "Engineering professionals want to learn about the latest technologies, but many times they have a time crunch. Registrants can take the courses at home or work at whatever time is most convenient. They can work at their own pace, reduce their scheduling conflicts and avoid travel while receiving quality, dynamic training. They can also manage their learning outcome through module assessments."

Lean manufacturing goes online

"Lean manufacturing – fundamentals" identifies the best practices for understanding and implementing different portions of lean manufacturing in an organization. The online course is designed to help an individual think through the process of lean implementation. There are pre-assessment and module assessment questions to help monitor an individual's understanding of lean manufacturing and the information presented.

This course offers the following topics of study: "Introduction to lean manufacturing"; "Key elements in lean manufacturing"; "Predictable processes"; "Flow"; "Material management"; "Performance metrics"; "Target an application"; "Five-phase approach"; "Evaluating success" and "Kaizen".

Total Systems Development (TSD), the content expert of this course, is a manufacturing engineering consulting firm dedicated to helping companies in their transformation from traditional mass production operations to leaner, more efficient manufacturing systems. It provides its clients with a full range of lean implementation services, including mapping and analysis, custom training for self-sustainability, short- and long-term implementation guidance, and coaching and mentoring on all organizational levels.

Seven steps to planning a manufacturing cell

The second online course, "Planning manufacturing cells – fundamentals", highlights the fundamentals of planning and implementation of a simple or small manufacturing cell and presents the three fundamentals of cell planning: parts; process; and coupling. This course covers the following topics: "Introduction to manufacturing cells"; "Step 1 – orient the project"; "Step 2 – classify the parts"; "Step 3 – analyze the process"; "Step 4 – couple into cell plans"; "Step 5 – select the best plan"; "Step 6 – detail and implement"; and "Step 7 – complex project and plans".

The authors of this computer-based training course are H. Lee Hales, William E. Fillmore and Bruce J. Andersen of Richard Muther & Associates, a Marietta, GA an organization, internationally recognized for its improvement in manufacturing planning methods.
