Profibus welcomes positive IEC fieldbus vote

Keywords: Profibus, Fieldbus

The Profibus Group - PNO UK has welcomed the approval of an international fieldbus standard (IEC 61158) announced by the IEC in Geneva (see www.iec.ch). Twenty-five out of 29 member countries voted "yes".

Profibus International Chairman Klaus-Peter Lindner commented: "After 14 years of hard work, and many twists and turns, the situation is finally resolved. The approach to widen the applications scope of IEC 61158, as requested by the Committee of Action last year, has received clear approval from the majority of IEC member countries and can now be published as the IEC 61158 Standard.

"We now have a positive basis for future work, including quick development of the communications profiles needed to bring the Standard into service. We look forward to supporting the fieldbus community in this work and confirming IEC 61158 as the fieldbus for the new century as soon as possible."

The new IEC 61158 documents standardise established fieldbus protocols including Profibus, thereby ensuring that the huge fieldbus investments made by end users are protected. Profibus International, the organisation representing Profibus User Groups in 23 regions, has nearly 1,000 members offering about 1,900 compliant products and services. Worldwide there are 300,000 Profibus installations and 3,000,000 Profibus devices in use today.
