Latest-generation rodless actuators provide compact solution for programmable linear positioning

Keyword: Actuators

A new series of electric rodless actuators from Parker Hannifin's Electromechanical Division provides the ideal solution for users seeking a low-cost means of implementing programmable linear motion control. Known as the ER series, the actuators are all characterised by a compact design envelope, and are available in an exceptionally wide range of configurations, making them a very versatile component for automation systems. Different configurations within the ER range can accommodate positioning speeds of over five metres/second, ± 0.012mm repeatability, and loads of more than 2,200N. The actuators can be supplied in any of 47 standard lengths, from 50mm to 3,300mm (see Plate 4).

Parker's ER series actuators are suitable for a wide range of programmable positioning tasks, especially where speed or high resolution and repeatability are prime requirements. Typical applications include feed-to-length, parts shuttling and coil winding systems. The actuators are available with 32mm or 50mm profiles, a choice of seven metric ISO mounting options, and a variety of motor configurations - including in-line, parallel and reverse-parallel. There is also a choice of drive mechanisms; users can elect to use ballscrew drives for applications demanding high positional accuracy or thrust, or belt drives when positioning speed or low cost are the principal considerations. A wide range of ballscrew pitch options and drive ratios further simplifies applications matching.

Plate 4Parker's new ER series electric rodless actuators are ideal for users seeking a low-cost means of implementing programmable linear motion control. Available in 47 standard lengths - from 50mm to 3,300mm - they can handle positioning speeds of more than 5 metres/sec

All ER series actuators are housed in a rugged, extruded aluminium body which has integral T-slots to allow for easy mounting of home and limit switches. The load-bearing platform is attached to the ball nut within the body of the actuator itself, and runs on an anti-rotation carriage equipped with high-efficiency roller bearings. For heavy duty applications that require a very high load capacity, the actuators are also available with precision square rail bearings. A unique feature of all ER series actuators is a stainless steel strip seal to guard against particle contamination, which is held to the body of the unit by magnetic strips.

Parker offers a choice of stepper drives and motors for use with ER series actuators, as well as a range of brushless servos for ultra high-performance applications. A wide range of accessories includes hall effect and reed switch position sensors, a linear potentiometer for absolute position feedback, and an electrically-operated brake. The actuators can also be supplied to special order with non-standard stroke.
