Tecnomatix Technologies Ltd has received orders worth approximately $1million from the Rover Group, for its computer-aided production engineering (CAPE) software licences, maintenance and implementation services. Tecnomatix products are marketed and supported in the UK from offices located near Sutton Coldfield, in the West Midlands. The Rover order covers growth in applications of ROBCAD for manufacturing process design and DYNAMO for dynamic digital mock-ups (see Plate 1).

"These orders, which involve various divisions of our group, are a first step in Rover Group's 'Digital Factory Program' that will be implemented in the production engineering departments across all manufacturing divisions. The goal of this programme is to reach much shorter time-to-market by accelerating all collaborative engineering activities from the beginning of the car development phase until the complete design of manufacturing processes and equipment", stated Stuart Adam, manufacturing director of Rover Group Body and Pressings.

"Rover Group Technical Centre and all manufacturing plants will use CAPE seats, configured especially for Rover Group. Tecnomatix tools will mainly be used for performing car body and trim and final assembly studies", added Robin Wilson, design process manager.

"Our decision results from the very successful experience we have had with Tecnomatix software tools in a recent car programme. Thanks to DYNAMO we initiated more than 4,000 design changes at the electronic built stage; in our previous working process, up to 80 per cent of these improvements would not have been identified until the physical mock-up stage", continued Robin Wilson.
