Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to consider whether a common process linking seemingly disparate phenomena could explain how men from a low-secure unit (LSU) could stabilise, progress and return to their community.

Design/methodology/approach

Reflective practice and a re-consideration of an LSU unknowingly operating as a therapeutic community.

Findings

The Hawthorne Effect, social psychiatry and Bowman LSU share a common humanity whereby people matter. As a result, LSU's can offer more than containment.

Originality/value

Therapeutic community principles can function in LSU's.
