Preface

We are pleased to be able to present this volume of Comparative Social Research on labour mobility in the enlarged single European market. Firstly, issues related to free movement of labour and services are having increasing influence on the research agendas within the European social science community. As ever more researchers are making large efforts in building knowledge and understanding of the dynamics shaping European labour market integration, the opportunity to compile such a selection of distinguished contributions is highly appreciated. Secondly, this volume is published at a point in time when labour migration and the EU/EEA migration regimes are at the heart of European public debate in the aftermath of Britain’s decision to leave the EU.

As one of the core controversies leading to this decision was related to the free movement of labour within the single market, we hope this volume also can be of use for the public and political actors that want to make the European labour market work for all.

We want to thank our colleagues at the Institute for Social Research and the Department of Sociology and Human Geography at the University of Oslo who invited us to be guest editors for this volume – and in particular Fredrik Engelstad and Daniel Arnesen who have supported us throughout the process.
