Turkmenistan will develop transit corridors

Friday, September 20, 2024

Significance

Having recently signed a raft of agreements, Turkmenistan has boosted its chances of becoming an important transit route for pan-Eurasian infrastructure projects. Ashgabat has not indicated a preference for any specific trade corridor. Instead, it is willing to consider seemingly opposing initiatives to elevate its regional influence.

Impacts

  • Georgia will begin construction of the deep-sea port of Anaklia to boost its position on the Middle Corridor.
  • Armenia, Iran and India will collaborate on developing the transnational corridor from the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea via Georgia.
  • China will push forward with its plans to initiate construction on the much-delayed China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway.
