BRICS will be increasingly relevant to South-east Asia

Thursday, August 29, 2024

Significance

In June, Thailand became the first South-east Asian country to apply for membership. Several other regional states are interested in joining.

Impacts

  • Thailand’s change in leadership will not affect its application.
  • Indonesia may apply to join BRICS after Prabowo Subianto assumes office as president on October 20.
  • Given its diverse membership, with divergent interests, BRICS will not undermine the economic and political importance of ASEAN.
