In June, Thailand became the first South-east Asian country to apply for membership. Several other regional states are interested in joining.

Thailand’s change in leadership will not affect its application.
Indonesia may apply to join BRICS after Prabowo Subianto assumes office as president on October 20.
Given its diverse membership, with divergent interests, BRICS will not undermine the economic and political importance of ASEAN.
