Syrian-Turkish normalisation efforts could pick up
Wednesday, July 31, 2024
Significance
Previous efforts to achieve detente have faltered because of the sheer complexity of the issues at stake: 3.6 million Syrian refugees in Turkey, Ankara's military presence in northern Syria to combat the Kurds and its support for opposition forces controlling Idlib province. However, both sides are interested in normalisation and Russia is mediating.
Impacts
- A Trump administration may yet consider a withdrawal of US forces from Kurdish areas in northern Syria.
- Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani will also engage in Syrian-Turkish mediation efforts to boost his regional standing.
- Turkey will work closely with the Iraqi government to constrain Kurdish political and economic autonomy.
