Nicaragua mining expansion will have serious impacts

Wednesday, May 15, 2024

The amount of land granted for mining has now surpassed 2 million hectares, having doubled between 2021 and 2023 to around 1.8 million. This rapid expansion in mining activity seeks to address an economic downturn that began with the government’s violent repression of protesters in 2018. Gold has become Nicaragua’s most valuable export.

  • Corruption allegations against officials involved in the mining sector will mount.
  • Access to external financing will become more restricted as lenders refuse to fund projects linked to environmental and social harms.
  • Militarisation of, and internal migration to, indigenous territory will increase.
