Friday, March 1, 2024

Significance

This leak included corporate documents and internal communications, and detailed a suite of spyware applications developed by Shanghai-based cybersecurity company I-Soon, a contractor for Chinese government agencies, police and the military. The I-Soon hack offers a unique insight into the Chinese hacking ecosystem, and particularly the role of private contractors.

Impacts

  • Assessments of China’s hacking landscape must take into account the fact that many of its employees are poorly paid and demotivated.
  • The leaks underline the role of insider threats in cybersecurity.
  • The West and China’s neighbours will pay greater attention to the intertwined nature of Beijing's authority and private hackers-for-hire.
