Argentine dengue outbreaks will become regular events

Friday, May 12, 2023

Significance

The previous all-time peak was recorded in 2020, with a total of 58,435 confirmed cases. At the same time, an all-time record 53 deaths have been reported so far this year -- twice as high as the previous record (26 in 2020).

Impacts

  • Vaccines and measures to reduce mosquito breeding may offer hope in future, but not in the current season.
  • Rising temperatures and rising poverty levels are facilitating the spread of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito across much of the country.
  • High numbers of infections will raise the risk of more serious cases in future as people are re-infected.
