Nigeria's next president may accomplish little

Tuesday, February 21, 2023

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have not historically exhibited substantial ideological differences. However, this year, both parties -- and outsider candidate Peter Obi’s Labour Party -- have released detailed economic and governance reform packages that differ tangibly and offer voters a diverse set of choices.

  • The new president must decide by June whether to renew fuel subsidies; they are fiscally unsustainable but their removal may prompt unrest.
  • The heightened chances of a run-off election adds to uncertainty over the final outcome.
  • An Obi presidency could face a hostile National Assembly, curtailing his authority.
