China factor will boost Japan-Taiwan economic ties

Taiwan is Japan's third-largest trade partner for both exports and imports, and its largest supplier of semiconductors by far. The bilateral relationship is becoming one of the most important in the region, shaping the region’s future economic and geopolitical map.


  • Japan will work to deepen political ties with Taiwan, but incrementally so as to minimise the risk of antagonising Beijing.
  • Tokyo will maintain strategic ambiguity on how far it will support Taiwan in a conflict, but signal increasing willingness to intervene.
  • Taiwan's presidential election in January may influence the pace of cooperation with Japan.
