Governance will prove a challenge for Lula in Brazil

Wednesday, January 4, 2023

The inauguration, attended by an estimated 300,000 people, took place under strict security measures after the police uncovered on December 24 a plan by supporters of outgoing far-right President Jair Bolsonaro -- narrowly defeated in last year’s run-off -- to blow up a tanker truck on an access route to the capital’s airport.

  • Bolsonaro’s self-imposed isolation since losing the elections will undermine his position as potential opposition leader.
  • If Bolsonaro decides against seeking to regain the presidency in 2026, one of his three politician sons could decide to run.
  • While less radical, Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema and his Sao Paulo peer Tarcisio de Freitas may seek to inherit the far-right vote.
