Algeria may struggle to expand influence in the Sahel

Tebboune argues that Mali's money would be better spent on economic development and initiatives to integrate northern Malians better into state institutions. Algeria is concerned at escalating tensions between the Malian junta and northern Malian signatories of the 2015 Algiers Accord.


  • Recently improved relations with France will benefit from Algerian frustrations with Russia's role in the Sahel.
  • Greater Algerian involvement in the Sahel could elicit parallel efforts from rival Morocco.
  • Major Algerian military deployments within the Sahel countries are unlikely.
