US interest in European football continues to grow

The case, before a court in Madrid, derives from an aborted attempt in 2021 by a dozen of Europe's top football clubs, several with US ownership, to form a breakaway super league modelled on the major leagues in US professional sport.

  • Pressure on UEFA is intense from England, which has more mega-rich owners than slots in UEFA’s lucrative Champions League.
  • Controversy over the current Qatar World Cup could catalyse further challenges to FIFA's role as world football's governing body.
