Vice-president's verdict will roil Argentina election

The conviction, for fraudulent administration, has no immediate effect: she retains immunity while in office and the appeals process will be lengthy. However, she startled both supporters and opponents by announcing immediately that she would not be a candidate for any office in 2023.


  • The eventual winner of the presidential election will face deep economic difficulties, low support and a fragmented Congress.
  • Competing opposition hopefuls will have to modify their pre-election discourse if CFK is not the target.
  • CFK has been written off politically before; to do so now would be ill advised.
