Russia-Iran arms sales rebalance lopsided relations
Thursday, December 8, 2022
Significance
Mohajeri's comments reflect open divisions on whether Iran should assist Russia's war, but the policy looks set to continue. Russia is cultivating ties with several countries to help it bypass financial and trade restrictions and in Iran's case also to replenish dwindling arms stocks.
Impacts
- Reports of UAV sales to Russia add to the factors dimming hopes of any return to the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal.
- As nuclear deal renewal recedes, Iran will look more to Russia, China and those Middle Eastern states prepared to talk to it.
- Moscow will do nothing to help Iran restore its influence and fend off Turkish encroachment in the South Caucasus.
