China's Belt and Road will evolve to fit new situation

Tuesday, December 6, 2022

China's top leaders are no longer promoting the BRI as a major international initiative, instead emphasising working-level contacts with partner countries. BRI activities continue but are being adjusted to improve the initiative's international image and address the problems and criticism it has encountered.

  • The average BRI project will be smaller than during the initiative's heyday in the mid-to-late 2010s.
  • Promoting a 'green BRI' will be a priority.
  • Infrastructure will remain the initiative’s core, but natural resource projects will receive more attention.
