Albanian opposition will struggle to make headway

Monday, December 5, 2022

The cost-of-living crisis in Albania and PS’s declining appeal should help the opposition make significant gains in the local elections scheduled for next May. However, PD’s internal divisions and the challenges faced by its leaders will limit opposition success at the polls.

  • There will be increased international scrutiny of Albania’s electoral practices to ensure that irregularities are kept to a minimum.
  • The prime minister’s focus on reducing the opposition’s electoral gains will slow accession talks with the EU.
  • Increased pre-election spending on infrastructure will moderate the economic slowdown resulting from high energy prices.
