Price cap on gas will divide EU member states

Monday, November 28, 2022

Significance

Although member states agree in principle on the need to overhaul gas markets and strengthen resilience, the EU is divided between German- and French-led blocs on the price cap issue. Neither group approves of the Commission’s compromise proposals.

Impacts

  • Because of the energy crisis, the EU has become interventionist, as governments and the Commission play an increasingly central role.
  • The issue of energy subsidies will drive a wedge between Germany and the rest of the EU.
  • The European energy platform could contribute to energy security in the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.
