Tigray-Amhara claims may delay Ethiopia peace process

Friday, November 25, 2022

Territorial disputes between Amhara and Tigray require delicate negotiations. This will likely delay, and could even derail, the peace process.

  • Tigray's position has become so weak that anything better than Amhara control of the territories may be seen as a victory.
  • Fears of Western sanctions and domestic political repercussions could influence thinking among Amhara elites and aid compromise.
  • Popular fervour over the land issue will aggravate intra-Amhara tensions, possibly prompting rallies and protests.
