More environment funds are opportunity for eastern EU

Eastern EU member-states, especially in the south-east, have lagged in both pollution reduction and transition to the carbon-neutral economy, largely thanks to aspects of their socialist legacy, a general attitude of ignoring ecological concerns and a short-termist outlook due to poverty.


  • Reducing air pollution would automatically reduce some of the most important sources of emissions.
  • West European ideas and training in environmental technologies and management are spreading.
  • Carbon transition offers the eastern and especially south-eastern EU member-states an opportunity for a significant leap forward.
