Tunisian president can push through new constitution

Friday, July 1, 2022

Significance

Nearly a year since Saied seized power, Tunisia is approaching the peak of his project to transform the political system -- a referendum on his new constitution is set for July 25. Saied has used an exclusionary approach, which is increasing opposition against him and could affect the referendum or the president’s ability to continue governing thereafter.

Impacts

  • The referendum may end political parties’ relevance and force many MPs into other lines of work.
  • Public protest and other opposition will make Tunisia appear unstable and therefore less desirable as a summer tourism destination.
  • The opposition to Saied will put greater pressure on an already weak political and administrative base, undermining his ability to govern.
