US states see sports betting as new revenue source
Thursday, January 27, 2022
Significance
Since the Supreme Court struck down a federal ban on sports gambling in 2018, state governments have been moving to legalise online sports betting in their jurisdictions in hopes it will prove a significant source of new tax revenue.
Impacts
- The federal government may be lobbied to modernise the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act to permit mobile betting on tribal lands.
- State lotteries will increasingly find it challenging to keep up with commercial technology and marketing innovation.
- Retail sports betting will be a ballot proposition in California this year, but a similar proposition in Florida is less likely.
