Moldova gets new gas contract with new price formula

Friday, November 5, 2021

Significance

The extension is a much-needed success for the Moldovan government, despite its ultimate aim of achieving energy autonomy from Russia. The terms of the deal, with higher prices than before but still far lower than on the spot market, are to Russia's advantage but Moldova at least has a secure supply to 2026.

Impacts

  • Higher energy prices for household consumers could dent the government's popularity.
  • Ukrainian assistance with Moldova's gas supply will solidify relations between these like-minded states.
  • Additional supplies from Romania will depend on the availability of gas in that country's domestic market.
