Wakit Tama will struggle to challenge Chad's junta

Thursday, September 16, 2021

Significance

Formed after the Chadian military seized power in April on the death of longtime President Idriss Deby, Wakit Tama rejects the framework of the military-led transition that is supposed to lead to parliamentary and presidential elections between June and September 2022. However, some Wakit Tama groups are working within it.

Impacts

  • The upcoming national dialogue will be a test for Wakit Tama, as parts of the coalition peel away and gravitate towards the CMT.
  • Wakit Tama’s limited mobilising power, and the CMT’s ability to attract opposition, will limit the former’s ability to challenge the CMT.
  • The dialogue is likely to be mostly a conversation within the elite, and ordinary people’s concerns are unlikely to be directed represented.
