Mexico metro crash political fallout will be gradual

Friday, June 4, 2021

The affected line (12) is the newest in the system, used by around 250,000 passengers daily. It has been plagued by problems since its 2012 inauguration. Investigations into the accident commenced shortly after it occurred, but findings are not expected until at least mid-June.

  • Existing infrastructure will deterioriate if funds continue to be channeled into new flagship projects associated with City officials.
  • Lawsuits against City officials by accident victims and metro workers may deliver more accountability than local authority investigations.
  • Line 12’s closure will have an environmental impact, as people resort to motor vehicles, whether private or public, to move around.
