Few foreign investors will remain in Myanmar
Thursday, April 22, 2021
Significance
The United States and other Western powers have imposed sanctions on senior military figures and military-controlled businesses in the light of the February 1 coup. China -- long a key partner to Myanmar -- has refused to criticise the junta, despite the latter’s increasingly heavy clampdown on anti-coup protesters.
Impacts
- Foreign companies that continue to do business with Myanmar will likely face increasing opposition from lobby groups and customers.
- Chinese banks will increase their exposure to Myanmar, filling the void left by Western finance providers.
- Most international donors will cease funding and technical support for projects in the country.
