Significance

The EU released its first collective Indo-Pacific Strategy this month, which stresses support for freedom of navigation in the region.

Impacts

Germany will not, at least initially, follow the US Navy in entering the claimed territorial waters of China’s Spratly Islands outposts.
Beijing is unlikely to retaliate against Germany over the deployment.
Asserting international law in the South China Sea will create a point of cooperation between the EU and the post-Brexit United Kingdom.
