Policy flaws may prolong Mexican poverty setbacks

Monday, March 1, 2021

Significance

Significant increases were recorded in numbers of people defined as poor and extremely poor. This is largely due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, but deficiencies in social policies have also played a role.

Impacts

  • The ASF’s recent admission of errors in its assessment of the decision to cancel the new Mexico City airport may undermine its credibility.
  • The lack of coordination among federal, state and municipal levels of government will hinder the speed and efficiency of social policies.
  • The modus operandi of several priority social programmes will enable their potential electoral use ahead of the July 6 mid-terms.
