Strikes pose new challenge to Belarus leader

Thursday, August 13, 2020

Police action has so far resulted in more than 6,000 arrests, two deaths and hundreds of injuries. Now workers at major state-run enterprises -- Lukashenka's support base -- are coming out on strike.

  • Western states have deemed the election neither free nor fair, but whether they will impose penalties is less clear.
  • For Russia, this is the best of the available outcomes, as long as Lukashenka restores stability, which is far from certain.
  • Ceding sovereignty to Moscow would undermine Lukashenka's self-made image as defender of the nation.
