East African tourism markets face COVID-19 dilemmas

Tuesday, July 7, 2020

Significance

Though they are faced with similar challenges, the responses they plan vary considerably -- as with their responses to the pandemic.

Impacts

  • Tanzania will seek to capitalise on Kenya’s continued lockdown to promote itself further as the region’s leading safari destination.
  • Rwanda will incentivise domestic tourism while cautiously opening itself up to international travellers.
  • Airlines will jostle for position, with Qatar Airways likely to emerge as airline of choice for long-haul travel to or from the region.
