Economic improvements in Mali will be too slow

Friday, February 21, 2020

Significance

Ranked 184th out of 189 countries in the UN’s 2019 Human Development Index, Mali faces long-standing economic and development challenges. In addition, the north and east of the country are beset by conflict and insecurity.

Impacts

  • Progress on public investment projects will be slow, despite international assistance.
  • Economic and development imbalances between the north and the south will remain a significant underlying factor of discontent and conflict.
  • Local political movements and armed groups will try to capitalise on discontent about the government to mobilise support.
