Balance will be elusive in fragile Argentine economy

Monday, December 16, 2019

Significance

The move, which has angered the farming sector, is one of several announcements aimed at boosting revenues in order to avoid austerity, and at generating enthusiasm among the supporters of President Alberto Fernandez and Vice-President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner (CFK). Yet some measures will generate unease among investors only partly reassured by the moderate early messages of Fernandez and Economy Minister Martin Guzman.

Impacts

  • Efforts to preserve international reserves may raise concerns over a return to greater economic intervention.
  • Judicial reform proposals risk increasing fears of backsliding on corruption and judicial independence.
  • Changes in management at state companies may unsettle investment partners.
