Subject

Prospects for Central Asia in 2020.

Significance

A presidential election is due in Tajikistan at some point in 2020. President Emomali Rahmon will win if he stands again, but persistent rumours suggest he might hand over to his son Rustom Emomali. Either way, it will not be a serious contest. In Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, the challenges are less about succession than about its consequences: both had presidents who left the scene confident that they could direct their successors, but with different outcomes.
