Carbon capture may be key for decarbonising Europe

Wednesday, July 3, 2019

Subject

Outlook for decarbonisation in Europe.

Significance

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is making a comeback as EU countries adopt ever more ambitious climate change targets. It is seen as a key enabler in the deployment of hydrogen technologies in particular. However, social acceptance remains uncertain and a new model for carbon transport and storage based on a publicly utility model is likely to be needed to gain buy-in from private sector companies.

Impacts

  • CCUS funding will support the exploration of new emissions reduction technologies.
  • CCUS progress, or lack of it, is likely to affect the speed of hydrogen technology adoption.
  • Transporting carbon dioxide by ship will provide a new income stream for shipbuilders and owners.
