Lithium market dynamics.
Lithium -- the key material used in the cathodes of electric vehicle (EV) batteries -- suffered serious difficulties in 2018. A battle over market share in China triggered a price war, pushing domestic battery-grade lithium carbonate prices from 24,000 dollars per tonne to nearly 11,000, while battery-grade lithium hydroxide prices also softened. With some delay, European and North American markets also saw prices drift and the value of some lithium mining stocks halved in 2018.
