Judicial crisis will add to corruption woes in Peru

Tuesday, July 24, 2018

Significance

Leaked transcriptions of taped conversations involving senior judges point to systematic corruption in the judiciary. Previous attempts to clean up the justice system have come to nought, largely because of internal resistance to outside interference. However, President Martin Vizcarra has so far stood his ground over the need for reform.

Impacts

  • The tapes point to a corrupt nexus between sectors of business, politicians and the judiciary.
  • Drug trafficking and other criminal activity involve the penetration of judicial institutions.
  • Pressure will mount for a complete overhaul of the methods by which judges are appointed and dismissed.
