Significance

At the start of last month, Singapore took over as chair of ASEAN. The regional grouping faces pressing challenges of diplomacy, trade and banking.

  • ASEAN Economic Community integration will remain slow.
  • Bank liberalisation will favour wealthier ASEAN states.
