Insecurity in Niger may rise

Wednesday, November 8, 2017

Significance

Chefou was reportedly recruiting youths from the Fulani ethnic group. There has been confusion around what happened during the incident, which was the US military’s first loss of soldiers in Niger since the deployment of US Africa Command (AFRICOM).

Impacts

  • Niger, together with Mali, will remain the weak links in the fight against jihadist militants.
  • Militants on the border of south-western Niger could collaborate with jihadists to worsen the security situation in the Lake Chad region.
  • Garnering local support would help improve the effectiveness of fighting jihadist networks in the Sahel.
