Subject

Problems facing Chad's regional counterterrorism efforts.

Significance

Meeting Chadian President Idriss Deby in July, Antonio Tajani, the president of the European Parliament, said Chad's contribution to regional counterterrorism efforts was crucial to regional stability. Chadian forces are currently fighting affiliates of al-Qaida in Mali and of Islamic State in the Lake Chad area.

Impacts

  • Weak oil revenue threatens the country's political stability.
  • Chad needs foreign aid to sustain its military commitments.
  • The G5-Sahel Group will be ineffective without Chad’s active participation.
