Israeli-Palestinian West Bank clashes could resurge

The heightened legal pressure on Netanyahu comes immediately after his management of a crisis over access to the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem exposed him to strong public criticism: 77% of Israelis describe his reversal of a decision to install metal detectors outside the compound as a “surrender”. The crisis also damaged Israel's regional relations, especially with Jordan.


  • If ailing Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is incapacitated, infighting could trigger further violence.
  • The PA may step up efforts to join international organisations, pressing its statehood claim.
  • An upsurge in Israeli sentiment over the Temple Mount could boost right-wing activists’ demands for more access for Jewish worshippers.
