Significance

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s hold on power is unchallenged but complicated by tensions on all fronts and his growing international isolation. Inside the Justice and Development Party (AKP), supporters of his son-in-law appear to be trying to oust the conservative religious ‘old guard’ but have failed so far. Public spending and export demand have boosted economic activity and the lira has stabilised but unemployment and inflation remain high.
